Here is the uncomfortable thing nobody selling you a $350 HDMI sync box wants to lead with: it cannot see Netflix. Not the Netflix app built into your TV, anyway. An HDMI sync box only knows about the pixels that physically travel through it, so the moment you press the Netflix button on your remote and let the TV’s own app do the work, your expensive gradient strip goes dark — or worse, sits on some stale colour from the last thing your Apple TV was doing.

For years that was just the tax you paid for pixel-perfect ambient lighting. In 2026 it stopped being the only option. Camera-based sync — a little fisheye lens that watches your panel and infers the colours — went from “the cheap compromise” to something Philips Hue itself now sells at the front of its own lineup. That’s a meaningful admission from the company that invented the category.

So: three ways to light the wall behind your TV, five or six products actually worth your money, and one protocol that still has nothing to do with any of it. Let’s sort it out.

The two architectures, honestly compared

HDMI sync boxes sit between your sources and your TV. Every frame passes through the box, which samples the image in real time and pushes colour data to your lights. Because it reads the actual signal, it is pixel-accurate, it has essentially no perception problem, and it works in a pitch-black room or a sunlit one.

The costs are real, though. You need every source plugged into the box, which means an extra device, extra HDMI cables, and a passthrough chain that has to keep up with whatever your TV and console can do. And built-in TV apps — the ones most people actually use — bypass it completely.

Camera-based sync clips a fisheye lens to your TV, aims it at the panel, and reads the screen optically. It does not care where the content came from. Built-in apps, a game console, a Blu-ray player, live broadcast, your TV’s screensaver — all identical to a camera. Setup is genuinely plug-and-play, and there’s no passthrough chain to break when you upgrade your console.

The trade is precision. A camera reads a reflective surface at an extreme oblique angle, so it’s inferring rather than measuring. Very dark scenes, heavy HDR highlights, and a brightly lit room all degrade the result. It also needs recalibrating if you move the TV, and the lens is a physical object stuck to a screen you paid a lot of money to look at.

There’s a third path worth naming: no sync at all. A plain bias light behind the panel reduces eye strain and improves perceived contrast for a fraction of the price, and honestly, for a lot of people that’s the better buy. If that’s you, our smart LED light strip comparison covers the field.

Philips Hue finally built a three-tier lineup

Ahead of IFA 2026 in Berlin — part of a broader wave of hub and lighting announcements — Hue did something it had resisted for years: it made TV sync affordable, and it did it twice. Both new products went on sale in the US on 3 September.

Hue Play Screen Sync — $119.99

This is the camera, and it’s the more interesting of the two. It mounts on the TV, uses a fisheye lens with automatic calibration, and syncs your Hue lights to whatever is on screen regardless of source. Hue’s own product page lists it at 1.5 W with a 2 m cable, Bluetooth and Zigbee radios, and — a detail worth more than it sounds — a guaranteed minimum support period of 60 months.

That last number matters. We’ve written before about smart home gear with an expiry date, and a published support window is now table stakes in the EU. Hue putting a hard five-year floor in writing is the right behaviour.

You can run it over Bluetooth with a single strip and no Bridge at all, which makes $119.99 a genuinely complete entry price. Add a Bridge and it drives a full Entertainment area.

Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 4K — $149.99

Same idea as the old box, stripped down: a single HDMI input, 4K at 60 Hz, up to ten lights with a Bridge. That single input is the whole story. If you run everything through an AV receiver or you genuinely only own one streaming stick, it’s fine, and it undercuts the flagship by two hundred dollars. If you have a PS5, an Xbox and an Apple TV, you’ll be reaching for an HDMI switch and cursing.

Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 8K — $349.99

Still the reference implementation, and still absurdly priced at list — though it routinely falls to the $245–265 range, so don’t pay sticker. You get four HDMI 2.1b inputs with HDCP 2.3, 8K60 or 4K120 passthrough, and Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos support. Firmware 2.5.0 in April 2026 added Display Stream Compression passthrough, 3D passthrough, and 144 Hz light syncing — the DSC support is what lets a PS5 Pro actually hit 8K60 through the box.

If you are a gamer with multiple consoles and a high-refresh panel, this is the only product on this list that doesn’t compromise. Everyone else is buying a compromise, and that’s fine, because most people should.

The strips

Hue also refreshed the light strips themselves. The Play Gradient Lightstrip starts at $99.99 and the Pro version — RGBWWIC LEDs with Hue’s OmniGlow tech — starts at $179.99. Both are cut-to-size for TVs up to 100 inches, which finally kills the “buy the exact size bracket” nonsense. The Pro lands 15 September 2026; the standard strip follows on 6 October.

One more from the same announcement: a $39.99 Wall Light Module that pulls Nanoleaf Shapes — Hexagon, Triangle and Mini Triangle — into the Hue ecosystem. Two rivals interoperating is not a thing we expected to type this year. Hue also confirmed cloud backup and restore for scenes and automations, plus natural-language “Custom AI Behaviors” arriving in early October for Bridge Pro owners.

Govee: still the value king, still the messier app

AI Sync Box Kit 2 — $239.99 / $259.99

On raw specification this beats the Hue 8K box for less money. HDMI 2.1 with four inputs and one output, 8K60 or 4K144 passthrough, VRR and ALLM support, two USB-C ports for the lights, 60 W supply. The bundled strip runs RGBWIC at 75 LEDs per metre, which is genuinely dense — that white channel is why Govee’s neutral tones no longer look like slightly sad lavender.

Pricing is $239.99 for 55–65-inch kits and $259.99 for 75–85-inch, with a monitor-sized version around $279.99. Reviewers at PC Gamer and elsewhere have been broadly positive; the recurring complaint is that the Govee Home app remains a maximalist mess compared with Hue’s, and you will spend an evening turning things off.

TV Backlight 3 — around $110

The camera-based option, and the interesting engineering story of the year. Govee shipped a dual 4 MP camera with a hybrid glass-plastic lens — the highest resolving power in a consumer TV backlight — splitting the screen into up to 24 independent zones rather than washing one colour across the strip. The strip is RGBWIC at 60 LEDs/m and roughly 20% brighter than the previous generation. It’s $110 for 55–65-inch and $140 for 75–85-inch.

TV Backlight 3 Pro — $179.99 / $209.99

Steps up to an HDR triple camera and a 5-in-1 RGBWWIC strip at 75 LEDs/m. If you’re going camera-based and you have an HDR-heavy viewing diet, the Pro’s extra sensor earns its keep; if you mostly watch SDR content, the standard 3 is the better value.

Both Backlight 3 models work with Matter and integrate with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, and Govee’s DreamView can chain sync across up to ten Govee devices — which is how you get the lamp in the corner joining in.

Nanoleaf 4D V2 — $99.99, and the cheapest way in

Nanoleaf’s second-generation 4D Screen Mirror kit is $99.99 in the US ($129.99 CAD) and remains the lowest-friction entry point to camera sync. V2 improved white and colour matching accuracy over the original and swapped in an ultra-flexible zigzag lightstrip with better adhesive — a small change that anyone who has fought a stiff strip around a TV’s rear cable channel will appreciate.

The four sync modes are a nice touch: 1D is adaptive white bias lighting, 2D mirrors the dominant screen colour, 3D scatters all screen colours across the strip, and 4D does a true positional match. Most people settle on 3D and stop fiddling.

The catch: V2 tops out at 65 inches. For an 85-inch panel you’re back on the original 4D kit or shopping elsewhere.

WiZ HDMI Sync Box — the $90 outlier

Signify’s budget brand quietly solved the price problem before Hue did. The WiZ HDMI Sync Box ships with a TV lightstrip included at around $90 for 55–65-inch TVs and $110 for 75–85-inch, with 4K120 passthrough. The obvious constraint is that it drives WiZ lights, not Hue ones — so it makes sense if you’re starting fresh or already own WiZ bulbs, and no sense at all if you have a house full of Hue.

What Matter does here: nothing

Let’s be blunt, because the boxes are covered in logos. There is no screen-sync capability in the Matter specification. Not in 1.4, not in 1.6.

When Govee says the TV Backlight 3 is “compatible with Matter,” what you get is the strip appearing in Apple Home or SmartThings as an ordinary colour light: on, off, brightness, colour temperature, hue. That’s genuinely useful — it means the strip participates in your normal scenes and automations without a cloud round-trip. But the sync engine itself lives entirely in the Govee app, and the same is true of Hue’s Entertainment areas.

Practically, this means you cannot build a cross-vendor sync setup. A Hue Sync Box will not drive a Govee strip. Nanoleaf’s camera will not talk to a Hue Bridge. Pick an ecosystem for the wall behind your TV and accept that this particular corner of the smart home is still vertically integrated — and will be until the Connectivity Standards Alliance decides real-time colour streaming is worth a device type, which nobody has signalled.

Worth noting from the same IFA announcement: all of Hue’s new bulbs and strips speak Matter over Thread. The lights are standards-compliant. The sync is not, and the two facts sit side by side on the same box.

The corollary is that lighting you already own can still play a supporting role. A hub-bridged Zigbee strip like the Aqara COB LED Strip T1, or a ceiling fixture such as the Aqara T1M, won’t sync frame-by-frame — both need an Aqara hub, which is also what exposes them to Matter — but either will happily drop to 5% warm white the moment your “Movie” scene fires. Half the effect, none of the extra hardware.

The Dolby Vision problem, and other fine print

HDMI sync boxes and Dolby Vision have an awkward history. Users have reported colour mismatches on Dolby Vision content through certain sources — the classic symptom is the strip glowing green while the screen is blue. Hue ships a “Dolby Vision enhanced compatibility” toggle buried in the Sync app under the sync tab’s overflow menu, in Advanced settings; it throws a scary “degraded image” warning that in practice you can ignore. Some setups also want low-latency Dolby Vision forced on the source side.

Camera-based systems sidestep the tone-mapping question entirely — they read the panel’s final output, whatever it did to get there — but pay for it in a different currency. Bright room lighting bleeding onto the screen confuses them, and very dark scenes give them little to work with.

On privacy: these lenses are aimed at the panel, not out into the room, which is a meaningfully different proposition from a security camera. Still, it’s a camera in your living room, and it’s worth spending three minutes on the vendor’s data policy before you stick it on.

What to actually buy

You own Hue lights and multiple game consoles. Play HDMI Sync Box 8K, bought on sale. Nothing else does 4K120 and 144 Hz light sync across four inputs.

You own Hue lights and watch mostly on built-in TV apps. Play Screen Sync, $119.99. This is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade on this list for the largest number of people, and it’s the cheapest Hue entry point ever.

You own Hue lights, one source, and a normal 4K TV. Play HDMI Sync Box 4K at $149.99, and check that “one source” claim honestly before you buy.

You’re starting from scratch and want the best price-to-effect ratio. Govee TV Backlight 3 at ~$110, or the AI Sync Box Kit 2 at $239.99 if you game and want HDMI accuracy. Budget an evening for the app.

You want the cheapest thing that genuinely works. Nanoleaf 4D V2 at $99.99, assuming a 65-inch or smaller panel.

You have WiZ bulbs already. WiZ HDMI Sync Box, ~$90 with the strip in the box.

The bottom line

2026 is the year the ambient lighting category grew up, and it did so by admitting that the technically superior approach was solving the wrong problem. HDMI sync is more accurate. Camera sync is more useful, because it works with how people actually watch television — on the apps built into the set, with the remote that came in the box.

Hue selling a $119.99 camera alongside its $349.99 flagship is the whole argument in one product page. Buy the camera unless you have a specific, concrete reason to buy the box. And if you’re staring at the price of all of this wondering whether it’s worth it, remember that a dumb bias light strip behind the panel gets you most of the eye-strain benefit for twenty dollars. The sync is for fun. There’s nothing wrong with that — just don’t let anyone tell you it’s an upgrade to your picture quality.
